EGGPLANT

(Solanum melongena)

Soil pH - 6.0 - Start the seeds indoors, 6 weeks before the last spring frost, using 3 to 4 inch pots. Remember, eggplant seeds need warm soil to germinate! The best germination rates occur when the soil temperature is between 72 to 80 degrees F. The use of a propagation mat or a heating cable is recommended in order to maintain the correct soil temperature. Seeds take approximately 10-15 days to germinate. Once the outside soil temperature has warmed, about 1 to 2 weeks after the last spring frost, transplant in a sunny location, spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart.
